WOW – what a surprise today!!!

Fell off the tree this morning!!!

Finally the lemon tree (Eureka Lemon) that bloomed in January of 2013 has produced a fully ripe lemon.  The tree has been living in the sunroom during most of the past two years and then out on the patio during the summer of 2013.  It has taken 1 & ½ years from a bud to get to this day, to this point.  As you can see there are more lemons to come in the days ahead.  So proud of this project, and with my patience over these months.  Haven’t tasted it yet – that will be the next test!

In Your Face #5

In Your Face!!!

Me, me, me.  Look at me.  No, look at me.  Better yet, skip all those and look at me!  Walking through the Gardens at Waters East, one almost hears this constant refrain.  Every plant wants attention.  Every bloom is screaming – “I’m so beautiful just look at me!”  In many cases they are right.  Take a look at some of the beauties basking in the sun and calling to be the center of your attention. Checkout the detail of some of the garden residents.  Get in “real close” see the detail and design.  Pretty amazing don’t you think?

All of these “portraits” were take here in the gardens.  Self centered though they may be, the flowers do make you stop and stare.  They seem to be doing “their thing” just for you.  So why not indulge them for a few moments while walking the paths.

The Eagle - Lookout Tree

Here are a few photos of the “Eagle Tree” as shot from the Gardens at Waters East.   They have been taken in different seasons.  Almost everyday, one or two American Bald eagles show up to watch me in the garden or probably and more likely, to do some fishing in Lake Michigan.  Perched high above StoneWater Beach on their favorite branch, they have a commanding view of the area.

Though the photos are not the best of quality, you get the idea.  There is a great abundance of wildlife here along the shores of the lake.  Enjoy your visit today and experience one aspect of living here at the Gardens at Waters East.

THE TREE #2 - profile

THE TREE #2

This is the second posting in the series “THE TREE” which follows the life of a special Honey Locust tree in the Gardens at Waters East.  If you have not read the first posting, it might be most helpful for you to do that.  Go to the archives in this Blog and check out the posting – Beginnings - found on March 7, 2014.  Reading this short introduction will put this tree and future postings in proper perspective.  It will be helpful.

Adding to that information posted on the 7^th, here is a little more as we prepare for the first signs of Spring when this Locust tree begins life anew.

The typical Locust can live 100 – 120 years which is fairly long for a tree that can be easily damaged in strong winds.  The special Honey Locust in the Gardens at Waters East was damaged in a strong wind storm in 2010 loosing one of it three main branches.  However when you look at it today, the damage is not noticeable.  The good-looking form is still there.

Despite its name, the Honey Locust is not a significant honey plant.  The name derives from the sweet taste of the legume pulp, which was used for food by Native American people, and it can also be fermented to make a beer. In an upcoming posting there will be photos of the seedpods where this pulp is found.

StoneWater Beach 1st. Walk

The shore that runs along the property of Gardens at Waters East is known as StoneWater Beach.  Obviously that means – lots of stones, from small rocks to large boulders rest at the water’s edge.   Forms and textures of every kind make up the limestone, granite and fossils of various sizes.  A great place on a Great Lake to walk and past the day.

This posting is a very short “sample” of all the photos taken while walking the beach over the years.  Nice to have the lake so close.  Nice to be able to enjoy it so often.
