Want a "Quickie" ? Today 5.13.14

“Quickies”

(All “Quickies” are photos taken and posted the same day)
These photos were taken this morning in the Gardens at Waters East. - - 5.13.14

The photos today are of the Bobolink.  Always a joy to see here in the gardens.  It is the only North American male land bird dark below and lighter on top.  The song is long, loud, and bubbling.  It is very distinct and I love it.  The birds migrate north in large flocks returning to the far north from their winter habitat in southern South America.  In fact, last year there were two-hundred and fifty in the gardens for about four hours resting before heading further north.  To my delight a pair stayed on to nest for the summer.  Hope that happens again the summer.  The Bobolink here today have traveled more than 7,500.00 to rest here in the Gardens at Waters East before continuing on their journey.
(Excuse the quality of the photos – I had to take them through the windows)
Enjoy

THE TREE #3

THE TREE #3

This is the third posting in the series “THE TREE” which follows the life of a special Honey Locust tree in the Gardens at Waters East.  If you have not read the first posting, it might be most helpful for you to do that.  Go to the archives in this Blog and check out the posting – Beginnings - found on March 7, 2014.  Reading this short introduction will put this tree and future postings in proper perspective.  Also it will be helpful if you have the time, look at the second posting found on April 7, 2014.

One would think that by this time of the year May 7th.  There would be more to see on the development of the Honey Locust in the garden here along the shore of Lake Michigan.  Well – guess again!!!  I promise that for the next posting coming in June there will be more “life” here on the tree.  For now – here is the present state of the Honey Locust.  As you see not much happening!!!  (Photos were taken on the 3rd. and the 7th.)

from a distance – approaching

one of the branches - close

Now be patient, in the June posting there will be some more “factoids” about the locust and photos showing more life – I HOPE!!!  It has been a long winter indeed.

at the base of the tree - today

However – let it be known that there is life in other parts of the garden.  Thus for your garden “enjoyment” on today’s visit;  here are a couple of photos from this week which makes me know that Spring will be happening and the Honey Locust will be coming to life shortly!

Seasonal Contrast in the Garden #11

Seasonal Contrast in the - Gardens at Waters East

Postings in this ongoing series will show the same garden “area” and “objects” at two or more different times / seasons of the year.  The contrast will offer the viewer an appreciation of the beauty found in the same spot but in different months.  Some of the photos have never been seen before, others were collected from earlier postings in order to provide the needed contrast.  Each season has its own “feeling”, has its own  beauty.  Check out my garden friend!

Enjoy

It is cold in this snow!

Is that a fly on my head?

 Still cold!

Up to my neck in this "stuff"!

A month later - and still snow!!!

 I look pretty here!

 Humm - snow!

Reference Note:  If you check out the archives for this Blog, you will find a number of “contrast” postings in this series.  All help in understanding the gardens throughout the year.
